Choosing the Right Hot Tub for You

May 25, 2023

According to a United States study by Pool and Spa Marketing, around 7.3 million Americans use hot tubs. Whether you're an avid hot tub user in search of a new hot tub or you're new to the world of hot tubs, choosing a hot tub may feel overwhelming at first. When shopping for hot tubs, there are several things to remember to ensure you're in love with your purchase.

Size

Size is important to consider when selecting a product. If you love to have parties and know that the entire crew will want to hang out on your back patio to enjoy cool summer nights, it's best to get an oversized one with several seats to accommodate your entertainment needs. However, a smaller model will suffice if you and your partner enjoy the relaxing warm water together.

Maintenance

A hot tub can be very easy to maintain with a good filter system and features such as an ozone generator and possibly a UV sanitizer to reduce the amount of treatment it requires. Treatment systems using silver have become very popular, since they are easy to use, and allow bathers to enjoy water with little to no chlorine in the water while soaking. Most people are moving away from saltwater systems since they are really chlorine generators and tend to have more drawbacks than advantages.

Budget

Consider which features are most important to you when choosing a hot tub. Some options, such as BlueTooth stereo systems, might be fun, but they are more expensive than other ways to have music in or near the tub. It's more important to have a size that will accommodate your family and seats that are comfortable for the people who will use them. Don't be shy; sit in different models to see which one fits best! Consider whether the hot tub will be used for therapy or just fun and relaxation. Some models with specific types of therapy features will cost a little more than ones with more basic features. Take a good look at the construction, too. Some spas, such as ones with steel frames, are designed to last longer than typical wood-frame tubs. Don't forget to think about energy efficiency, too. A well-made, efficient spa might cost a little more initially but will cost less to operate over the years.

Warranty

While having the right features is important, selecting a product with a solid warranty is more important. It doesn't matter how cool your new hot tub is if it's broken and you can't afford to fix it. Ensure that your new product has at least a one-year warranty, and read the fine print to determine what the warranty covers. Be sure your dealer has an in-house service department and is equipped to be able to help with any warranty issues or repairs that may someday be needed.

Designing Your Hot Tub Setting

Be sure to allow space around the hot tub. All hot tubs will need repair at some point. Plan to have at least two (or better yet three) feet of open space on all sides of the tub, not only for repairs but also just for general maintenance and cleaning. The best brands will have removable skirt panels on all sides and removable insulation so that everything underneath is accessible. Building a deck around the tub is generally NOT a good idea because it can make it difficult or impossible to remove the side panels. Instead, enhance the setting with some potted plants or movable items to customize the area.
